<A study in the USA comes to the conclusion that
many children are incorrectly diagnosed with ADHD.
The researchers estimate the drug costs for the presumably
incorrect diagnoses to be up to $500 million.
According to estimates, ADHD affects around four to eight
percent of all school children in Germany.
According to a study, nearly a million children in the
United States may be living with a misdiagnosis of
concentration disorder ADHD. Affected children are
above all toddlers in the kindergarten and school children
in the primary school, wrote the lead author of the study,
Todd Elder, from the University of Michigan in the
“Journal of Health Economics”. Kindergarten toddlers are
diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactive syndrome
(ADHD) 60 percent more often than the oldest children in
the group. Among schoolchildren the proportion is even
twice as high.
The diagnosis is often made by a doctor, but often at the
instigation of the educator or teacher. "But the
'symptoms' may simply reflect the younger children's
emotional and mental immaturity," Todd explained in the
study.
Long-term effects unclear
The authors of the study put the drug costs alone for the
presumably incorrect diagnoses at 320 to 500 million
dollars (250 to 390 million euros). This would burden the
state's Medicaid health system with up to $90 million.
In addition, the long-term effects of such treatment of
children with psychotropic drugs have not been well
researched. For their investigation, the data of 12,000
hildren were evaluated. ADHD is associated with difficulty
concentrating, unusual urges to be active and moving, and
extreme impulsivity.

they destroy everything which is not stable - this is a

By Mathias Hamann -- Holyday for difficult guests: An
annual summer camp for children with attention deficit
disorder takes place in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
(Germany). Because everyone there is a little different,
no one stands out anymore. It's relaxing - and if
necessary, there's always a relaxation room.
“I often cause terror, push others and like to provoke,”
says the 14-year-old girl with the green cap. Sometimes
she completely freaks out. Now she jumps through the
forest with eight other children and collects wood for a
campfire. The girl is thin and her tantrums don't match
her appearance. And yet she is one of those children with
whom holidays can be extremely tiring.
The girl and the other children collecting for the
campfire have attention deficit disorder (ADD) or
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). They find
it difficult to concentrate and sometimes they become very
aggressive. There is currently no clear test to diagnose
ADHD. In Germany it occurs - depending on estimates - in
two to six percent of children. It is often
said that ADHD is just a fashion disease.
One thing is certain: these children are not easy to
handle. Here on the Mecklenburg Lake District they are
among themselves. The youth meeting center at the farm
"Forsthof Schwarz" has hosted a holiday camp for children
with ADD and ADHD for years. Topic of this year: Vikings.
Fantastic care relationship
The organizer Fred Freese welcomes the wood collectors as
chief Viking. He has put on a mustache and talks about his
idea: "Many of the children here don't go on school trips
or holiday camps because they have difficulties in a large
group." That's also the reason why teachers sometimes
don't take ADHD children with them on school trips -
there's a lack of supervisors. His own children feel the
same way, so he started the ADHD camp nine years ago. Back
then he started with 30 children, now 146 are coming in
two weeks.
One adult takes care of two children. In order to maintain
the high number of carers, the organizers are offering
financial incentives: if one parent accompanies their
child, the week costs 150 euros for both of them; if the
child goes alone, it costs 200 euros. The organizers also
rely on interns and aspiring educators to keep the price
low.
At the first summer camp nine years ago, one adult looked
after four children. But that was too strenuous, the child
"Freese" remembers. Today they could better avoid
conflicts escalating. If that doesn't work, there is also
the relaxation room where someone is relaxing. Freese says
he only had to send a child home once because he was too
violent, but that was five years ago.
[ADHD children don't have strong nerves]: Arguments
and fights quickly arise
What is special about the boys and girls? They seem
lively, a few are poking each other in the ribs, others
are playing tag. Actually everything is normal, right?
"You notice that when you're with them for a long time,"
says Frank Wiegert. The father is sitting under a wooden
roof and it has now started to rain. “Arguments or fights
break out much more quickly than with others.” The
children are very impulsive, some of them freak out,
sometimes even friends argue. Despite the vacation,
Wiegert looks exhausted.
But there are other children here too: Frank Wiegert's
son, 15-year-old Jan, has Asperger's syndrome, a mild form
of autism. He jumps up, his hand shooting out in greeting.
"It's difficult for me to establish contact with others,"
he explains his illness. That's why it's not so easy to
find friends at school: "The others don't want to hear how
I talk." He speaks to them too elected. But he is also
more interested in his own topics than in theirs. Here in
the camp he loves to immerse himself in his books and
architectural sketches.
He's been coming to the holiday camp for five years now:
"Everyone here has a bit of a problem, it's totally normal
if you're not normal here," says the lanky boy. His
friends sit in the room, laughing and nodding. That's the
highlight of the camp, it makes everyone more relaxed.
[ADHD youths are healing up to 18 mostly]: "The
[healthy] high school students are much worse" [because
of arrogance]
The parents also feel good: "Otherwise you think your
child is unique and particularly stressful," says Stephan
Leibiger. The 43-year-old is helping in the camp for the
second time and is there as a lifeguard. He doesn't see
the many children with ADD as a burden, but rather as a
liberation: "You can see that your own child is not
special, there are others who are the same."
"Many teachers think that ADD is not an illness, but
rather a fad diagnosis and that the children are just
badly raised," he says and then talks about his eldest
daughter: she was unfocused and kept wetting her pants.
Medication would have helped. Because the summer holidays
in his state start later, he gave his children time off so
they could take part.
The rain stops and the gang with red, yellow or green caps
sets off. The colors of the hats symbolize the age groups,
the yellow ones are among the youngest at five years old.
You have to complete game stations. The oldest, aged 15 to
18, wear a blue cap and look after the stations. While
they wait for the next group of little ones, they talk
about their lives: They were able to overcome their
problems with therapy and medication, and some have
become calmer with age.
The head of the youth meeting place, Sylvia Röseler, is
looking forward to the children, she says. The camp is
well organized and the supervisors take care of the
children. Other visitors are sometimes more stressful: "The
high school students with their arrogance are much
worse." She pulls out her booking folder from
the previous year. After the dates for the ADHD camp she
wrote a “Hurrah” with lots of exclamation points.
Fred Freese says that this year there were more
registrations than places, and next year half are already
reserved. His son also wants to come along again and
again, soon as a carer.

<ADHD patients sleep little and feel tired in the
morning.
Adults with ADHD appear to have a disturbed day-night
rhythm - experts hope to develop new therapeutic
approaches.
"Whether people are early risers or night owls is at least
partly genetically pre-programmed; and this "genetic
program of the day-night rhythm" seems to be fundamentally
disturbed in people with ADHD," says Johannes Thome. He
has been director of the clinic and polyclinic for
psychiatry and psychotherapy at the Rostock University
Hospital for over six months. Previously, the 44-year-old
doctor held the chair for psychiatry at the University of
Swansea in Wales, Great Britain. From there he brought the
research focus on ADHD in adults ("Fidgety Philip
syndrome") to Rostock and established it alongside
dementia research at the Rostock Psychiatric University
Clinic.
Adult psychiatry worldwide has only been dealing with this
topic for a few years," says Thome, who is also Secretary
General on the board of the World Federation of ADHD. "It
is the aim of our clinic to offer optimal diagnostics and
therapy for adult ADHD patients, which leads to an
improved quality of life," says Thome, explaining his
goal.
Problems in work and private life
The scientist recently published his first findings
together with Andrew Coogan from the National University
of Ireland, with Alison Baird, and with other scientists
from Swansea in the internationally recognized journal
“Molecular Psychiatry”. “AHDS has been very well
researched in children,” says Thome. "Many patients don't
lose this mental disorder until they turn 18." In about a
third of patients, ADHD does not stop. There is hardly any
specialist medical care for them in Germany.
[LIE: there are healings for ADHD people with: natural
medicine, homeopathy, healing eurhythmia, healing sounds,
psychotherapy, industrial food restrictions, etc.].
Those affected have significant difficulty concentrating,
problems in their work and private lives, and miss
appointments. They suffer from sleep deprivation and mood
swings, are overactive and impulsive, and do not have
their lives under control. When these patients turn to
alcohol, an addiction problem arises. It is estimated that
around three to five percent of the adult
population is affected by ADHD.
Shortened rhythm
“We have observed that the 24-hour rhythm is often
disturbed in mentally ill people,” said Thoms. "There is
evidence that the rhythm is shortened in ADHD patients."
You sleep little and feel tired in the morning. “Night
owls” are also much more common in this patient group than
in the normal population.
At the Rostock University Hospita, life rhythm of adult
ADHD patients is now being examined. In fact: Medical
researchers are looking for the genetic, cellular and
molecular changes that are responsible for the disturbed
time rhythm in adult ADHD.
The Rostock researchers are tracking patients' activity
levels using an Acti-Watch, a miniature computer that
looks like a quartz watch and can be worn on the wrist.
This is how the day-night rhythm is recorded.
Disturbed gene production
The researchers also investigate the so-called clock genes
using an independently developed method that only a few
laboratories worldwide have mastered. “This is not a
genetic test,” clarifies Thome. Rather, the amount of the
gene product that is responsible for the human internal
clock is measured. "If we get proof that gene production
for the 24-hour rhythm is disturbed, we have the
scientific explanation for why adults with ADHD often have
problems with their day and night rhythms," says Thome,
describing the procedure. These findings could also
contribute to the development of new therapeutic
approaches. Only since this year has there been an
approved ADHD medication for adults.
At the beginning of next year, the Rostock doctor wants to
transfer the examination method to other mental illnesses
with severe disruptions to the rhythm of life. “Primarily
on dementia patients, in whom nocturnal restlessness and
agitation have been described,” says Thome. In another
study, his clinic wants to find out how drugs can
influence and possibly improve the disturbed gene
production. The successful cooperation with Dr. Coogan
will be continued and intensified. (red)>

March 6, 2012: ADHD diagnoses: Normal
immaturity is often interpreted as 'pathological' and as

<A
large-scale study confirms what experts have already
feared: ADHD is often misdiagnosed - immature behavior is
interpreted as pathological.
Children who start school early are particularly likely to
be diagnosed and treated for attention deficit disorder
(ADHD). Their immature behavior compared to their older
classmates is mistakenly interpreted as pathological, as
Canadian researchers found in a study of almost a million
elementary school children.
The risk of misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment is
particularly high for children who had their birthday
shortly before the school starting age deadline. They are
typically the youngest and most immature in their class, the
scientists report in the Canadian Medical Association
Journal. (doi:10.1503/cmaj.111619)
Analyzes confirmed fears that the normal range of children's
behavior is increasingly being treated with medication, says
lead author Richard Morrow from the University of British
Columbia in Vancouver. Younger children in a class are often
mislabeled and treated incorrectly due to their typical
behavior. The study showed that such children were 39
percent more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD and 48 percent
more likely to be treated with medication.
Researchers warn of the consequences of a hasty diagnosis
Given these numbers, researchers warn against unnecessarily
exposing children to the potential harms and long-term
consequences of misdiagnosis and drug treatment. Drugs for
ADHD such as methylphenidate (=Ritalin) can have a negative
impact on children's appetite, growth and sleep.
The scientists say that the risk of later cardiovascular
diseases is also increased. In addition, parents
and teachers often behaved differently towards children with
ADHD. This in turn could lead to psychological consequences
such as poor self-esteem in children.
"This study raises questions for doctors, teachers and
parents; we have to ask ourselves what needs to change,"
says psychiatrist Jane Garland, co-author of the study from
the University of British Columbia. In the future, we will
have to pay more attention to the relative age of the
children and also take more into account their behavior
outside of school for the school entry tests.
Almost a million children between the ages of six and
twelve were examined - [children born in December are
the most unmature in school classes]
For their study, the researchers evaluated data from
937,943 children between the ages of six and twelve and
followed the health development of these children over
eleven years. All children were enrolled in school in the
Canadian province of British Columbia, where
the school enrollment deadline is December 31st.
Children who have a birthday shortly before this date are
allowed to go to first grade the following year; Children
born at the beginning of January have to wait a year. In
Germany, the deadline varies depending on the federal
state, but for most of them it is in the summer.
The effect of relative age on ADHD diagnoses was observed
throughout the study period and in children of all age
groups examined, the researchers say. Children born
in December were always more affected than children
born in January and therefore started school
later.
This counts for both girls and boys, although boys
overall are up to three times more likely to be
diagnosed with attention disorder and treated
accordingly.
It is not yet clear why boys are more affected. However,
it is assumed that this could be due to the slightly
different expression of the symptoms in both sexes: Boys
with ADHD are often striking with hyperactivity and
impulsive behavior [beating, killing,
destroying everything, violating], while in girls
the attention deficit disorder is more often expressed
through dreaminess and lack of concentration [loosing
things] - and is therefore perhaps less likely to be
recognized.

<Anyone who fidgets, is impulsive [beating, killing,
destroying and violating everything without reason] and
cannot concentrate well [not learn writing and not learn
math] must have ADHD. Youth psychiatrists often make
decisions based on these principles. A new study shows that
they are often wrong.
Children and adolescents are too often diagnosed with
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to
their own statements, researchers at the Ruhr University
Bochum [Germany] and the University of Basel [Switzerland]
have proven this for the first time with representative data.
According to this, psychotherapists and psychiatrists tend
to make their judgments based on rules of thumb instead of
sticking closely to the valid diagnostic criteria, as
the Ruhr University explained. Significantly more misdiagnoses
are made among boys than among girls.
According to the information, the scientists wrote to 1,000
child and adolescent psychotherapists and psychiatrists
nationwide, 473 of whom took part in the study. They were each
given one of four different case histories and were asked to
make a diagnosis and suggest treatment.
Often misdiagnosed
In three of the four cases there was no ADHD; only one case
could be clearly diagnosed as an ADHD disorder using the
applicable guidelines and criteria. In the other three
cases, too, the result was often ADHD.
Decisions are often made based on prototypical symptoms, it
said: “The prototype is male and shows symptoms of motor
restlessness [for example: legs always moving], lack of
concentration [cannot read nor maths] or impulsivity [beating
girls without end and destroying everything - with joy - up to
violations in youth then!].” A boy is often automatically
assumed to have ADHD, but a girl is not. Another result of
the study is that men are diagnosed with the syndrome more
often than women [because women are the main victim of
ADHD boys and men and their symptoms are mostly only lack of
concentration and not aggressivity].
Number of ADHD cases increased by 400 percent
The scientists criticize that ADHD diagnosis has become
inflationary: between 1989 and 2001, the number of cases in
clinical practice increased by almost 400 percent. Dispensing
of ADHD medications increased ninefold from 1993 to 2003.
Dosages also increased. These numbers and the
apparently great public interest in ADHD are offset by “a
remarkably small base of empirical studies on this topic,”
write the authors of the study.>

krank würde definiert, was gegen bestimmte Regeln verstoße
<Created on August 4, 2012 by Winston Smith
The American psychiatrist Leon Eisenberg is
considered to be the inventor of the psychiatric disorder
attention deficit/hyperactivity syndrome, or ADHD for short
- also popularly known as fidget syndrome. This label
pathologizes children and young people who attract attention
at school due to restless, impulsive behavior [the envy
syndrome ADHD expresses itself like this: always beating
girls up, pulling girls by the hair, beating up little boys,
destroying everything that is not nailed down - in youth up
to rape and rioting with the goal provoking the maximum of
material damage]. As a rule, psychiatrists then prescribe
the stimulant methylphenidate (trade name Ritalin),
which scoffers also refer to as “coke for children”. Critics
have long suggested that ADHD is an invented illness.
Shortly before his death, Eisenberg confessed
to the medical journalist Jörg Blech that
AHDS was a prime example of a manufactured illness, as the
Frankfurt General News (Frankfurter Allgemeine - FAZ)
reports. Furthermore, the FAZ states that mental illnesses
are not illnesses, but rather a pattern of interpretation:
Mental illness is defined as anything that violates certain
rules and deviates from norms. These norms would not be
fixed once and for all, they could change.
The conservative FAZ has now reached an opinion that the
libertarian psychiatrist and psychiatric critic Thomas Szaz
had long held. Szasz believes that mental illness does not
exist in the true sense, but only as a metaphor for
undesirable behavior.
[But considering the violence and damage by ADHD persons,
this IS an illness - substances are missing in the brain by
defect glands - and one can heal this].
Blech gave an interview on Deutschlandradio in which he
reported on his visit to Eisenberg. Eisenberg once fought to
have ADHD included as a supposed brain disorder in the DSM –
the bible of psychiatry. But Eisenberg changed his mind. He
now believes that child psychiatrists need to do a much more
thorough job of identifying the psychosocial reasons that
could lead to behavioral problems.
But the fashionable diagnosis AHDS is one thing above all: a
huge deal for the pharmaceutical industry. According to
Spiegel, Ritalin prescriptions increased from 34 kilograms
in 1993 to 1,760 kilograms in 2011.>
[But Ritalin has heavy side effects and cannot be taken
for a long time. People have to come to natural medicine,
homeopathy, healing eurhythmy, psychological analisis,
natural food, etc. - and they will HEAL without heavy side
effects].

<Interview | Lisa Mayr
Family therapist, author and Standard.at columnist
Jesper Juul.
The diagnosis of ADHD in children is quickly at hand.
There is also a social problem [of neglect] behind the
disease, says Danish family therapist Jesper Juul.
Children and young people react quickly to pressure that
causes them to become ill with symptoms - this takes
longer for their parents. Jesper Juul thinks this
is a drama. The Danish family therapist, best-selling
author and Standard.at columnist (link)
is convinced that a lifestyle that constantly distracts
and amuses children ultimately makes them sick. Children
need a lot of unstructured time to learn independence,
creativity and contact with their own needs. This also
protects against ADHD.
Standard.at: ADHD is the most frequently diagnosed
behavioral disorder in children and adolescents today.
Those affected are restless internally and externally
[with violence without end], inattentive and have
difficulty concentrating [so they cannot learn to read nor
maths]. Do you really think that something is being
exaggerated here?
[ADHD is a protest against constant neglect]
Jesper Juul: The diagnosis undoubtedly exists - and
it existed 100 years ago. Today, however, it is used to
distract from a conflict: the fact that parents often
don't know how to deal with their children. In many cases,
ADHD is the result of professional neglect.
Unfortunately, [toxic pharma] doctors often play along.
Danish child psychiatrists have even admitted that they misdiagnose
40 to 45 percent of cases of childhood ADHD.
[ADHD is a protest reaction against constant pressure
and competition - always more time for school robbing
free time]
derStandard.at: Can you say that the time or
economic pressure that many parents experience will cause
ADHD in their children?
Juul: This pressure plays an important role.
Because ADHD is a lifestyle symptom. Children today are
forced to imitate their parents' lifestyle - even though
their parents realize that they themselves are unhappy. 30
years ago our society had more time and space for
children. In recent years we have taken away around
twelve hours of free time per week from the children.
By free time I mean really free time that is not scheduled
with activities.
Juul: Ein wesentlicher Unterschied
Jetzt. Deshalb entwickeln sie sehr schnell Symptome, die
zeigen, dass unser Lebensstil nicht passt. Sie fangen an,
Nein zu sagen und trotzig zu werden. Kinder machen also
genau das, was die Erwachsenen eigentlich tun sollten. Die
klassischen Stresssymptome wie Bluthochdruck, Burn-out,
Beziehungskrise - das kommt bei Erwachsenen meist
zeitverzögert.
[Parents are full at work suffering constant stress -
and separation comes after 8 to 9 years - new drama for
the child]
derStandard.at: How do parents manage not to charge
children with their own pressure they are exposed?
Juul: I am very often asked to say something about
the so-called work-life balance in my lectures. If I do
that, it takes two minutes and no one wants to hear it:
adults today are faced with an existential question that
is, in principle, simple. It is: Do I want to lead a life
like this? Do I want to be stressed, unable to have sex,
and that this system only works because we are so well
organized? That's what an adult has to ask themselves. If
he comes to the conclusion that he wants to live like
that, then it comes at a price. Unfortunately also for the
children. We see today that people who live like this
break up after eight or nine years because they can't
stand the pace.
[Parents are full at work never playing nor reading nor
hiking with the children - then the children become
rebels]
derStandard.at: Let's mention the parents sitting
at the playground with their smartphones in their hands or
dragging their children running through the city. Can this
really only be explained by general acceleration? Isn't it
also about the importance that children have in a society?
Juul: A key difference between children and adults
is that adults can partially live in the future. You can
say: Now I'll work like crazy for two years, then we can
afford the house, the car, whatever. Children can't say
that, they live in the here and now. That's why they
quickly develop symptoms that show that our
lifestyle doesn't suit us. They start saying no and
becoming defiant. So children do exactly what
adults should actually do. The classic symptoms of stress
such as high blood pressure, burnout, relationship crisis
- these usually occur with a time delay in adults
[Health factor for children: kindergarten in the forest]
derStandard.at: If both parents earn money, have
to work multiple jobs and are under economic pressure, it
is difficult for them to spend unplanned time with their
children. What role does the state have to take the
pressure off children?
Juul: A big one. There are so-called forest
kindergartens in Denmark and Sweden. They used
to be an emergency solution in large Scandinavian cities
because there were no buildings for kindergartens there.
They said: We'll pick up the children in the city and take
them to the kindergarten in the forest. You are there all
day outdoors, without noise and without dust. These
facilities have been around for 30 years and are well
researched. It is clear that the children there are doing
much better than other children. They are more creative,
less sick, less stressed - and they are less likely to
have ADHD.
derStandard.at: Why is that?
Juul: Because in nature they have a lot of space
that they have to structure themselves. They have
adult-free zones there. Children need that. There is not
even a fence around the kindergarten premises. But the
children know exactly how far they can go and what they
are not allowed to do. They are not overly cared for
there, but are very independent. That makes them stronger.
[Too much pressure against children provokes a
psycological blockage in children]
derStandard.at: In your book "Together" you
describe children who are constantly "angry" because they
are constantly being forced into activities. You say that
these children can no longer find the way to themselves.
Juul: It is incredibly difficult for these children
to develop empathy, play alone or keep themselves occupied
because they are used to being constantly distracted. They
lose touch with their desires and needs. That's why I
recommend parents to give their children as much
unstructured time as possible and not to constantly force
them into planned daily routines. Parents should have
time for their children without constantly filling
this time with activities. This is very important.
[To have a calm moment is important - and children have to
learn that also calm moments are important - for relaxing
body and for meditation and reflecting].

not planning every minute - otherwhise remains no minute at
all for children's creativity]
derStandard.at: Why have many parents difficulties
passing a day with them without a specific goal? Have we
forgotten how to do nothing without distraction?
Juul: Because many parents have educators as role
models. They feel obliged to constantly stimulate the children
and to constantly do something. That makes the children sick.
There must be a clearly noticeable difference for the child
between kindergarten or school and the family. Of course,
adults should be there for the children as much as possible,
but they should not constantly play with the children. Parents
should live their adult lives. Because children can only learn
how to be adults at home. But if they only experience their
parents as play uncles and aunts, then they learn nothing
about adulthood. (Lisa Mayr (link),

US state of Texas has filed a lawsuit against
Pfizer and its drugmaker Tris Pharma after evidence
emerged that the companies sold ADHD drugs to children
despite knowing the drug was ineffective and caused brain
damage (link).
The lawsuit, filed by Attorney General Ken Paxton
in Harrison County District Court, alleges that Pfizer
knowingly distributed a drug used to treat (ADHD) to
children on Medicaid - despite the drug's extremely harmful
side effects.
Infowars.com reports: The drug Quillivant XR is a stimulant
that affects brain and nerve chemicals involved in
hyperactivity and impulse control.
From 2012 to 2018, "Pfizer and Tris continually manipulated
Quillivant tests to hide poor manufacturing practices and
defraud the Texas Medicaid program," a press release said.
During these years, many families complained that the
medication was not working. The complaint states:
"At no time did defendants warn Texas Medicaid
providers or policymakers that Quillivant had known
manufacturing problems that reduced its effectiveness,
thereby depriving the Medicaid program of the critical
information on which it relies. ... As a result, thousands
of Texas children received an adulterated Schedule II
controlled dangerous substance."
Kim Mack Rosenberg, acting general
counsel for Children's Health Defense, commented on the
lawsuit, saying, "Pfizer is once again in the spotlight for
allegedly unethical and fraudulent activities."
Rosenberg told The Defender (link):
"I applaud the Texas AG for taking action here to
protect some of Texas' most vulnerable children, those who
rely on Medicaid. It is inexplicable and unconscionable to
knowingly provide adulterated medications to vulnerable
children."
"Unfortunately," Rosenberg added, "this is not the first
time that questions have been raised about Pfizer's conduct,
including misconduct that allegedly led to children dying in
clinical trials in Nigeria in the 1990s (link)
and serious questions about Pfizer's COVID-19 injections (link)
and its treatment drug Paxlovid." (link)
The criminals mentioned in the lawsuit include Pfizer,
Tris and Tris CEO Ketan Mehta.
The lawsuit stems from a whistleblower complaint (link)
from Tarik Ahmed, who served as Tris's chief technology
officer from 2013 to 2017.
The attorneys are suing for more than $1 million, including
civil penalties, and are asking the court to force Pfizer
and Tris to return to the state of Texas all profits they
received from sales of Quillivant under the Texas Medicaid
program "as a result of defendants' unlawful actions," in
addition to repaying double the amount
Attorneys from Paxton's office requested a jury
trial.
In 2017, Quillivant had sales of approximately $193.3
million in the United States. The drug was developed by
NextWave Pharmaceuticals, which purchased Pfizer in 2012 for
$680 million.
The attorneys accused the criminals of defrauding the Texas
Medicaid program "by providing adulterated pharmaceutical
medications to Texas children (link)
in violation of the Texas Medicaid Fraud Prevention Act, now
known as the Texas Health Care Program Fraud Prevention Act
(THFPA)." (link)
The press release states: "For years, Tris changed the
drug's testing method in violation of federal and state laws
to ensure that Quillivant cleared regulatory hurdles and
could continue to be sold."
According to Reuters (link),
Pfizer said in a statement that it has reviewed the
lawsuit's allegations on "multiple occasions" and "has not
identified any impact on the safety of the product."
Pfizer said the lawsuit was without merit and would dismiss
the lawsuit.
A spokesperson for Tris told Reuters in an email: "We
categorically deny and intend to vigorously defend these
allegations in court.
The medicament has failed quality control for years
Almost immediately after approval by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), Quillivant failed routine quality
tests. The complaint states (link):
"As of at least October 2012, Tris quality control
personnel observed that Quillivant's sample, tested to
FDA-required dissolution specifications, failed to produce
passing results.
“Dissolution testing is an important quality control tool to
measure whether a drug has been properly manufactured by
comparing a simulated release of the drug to a standard
established when the drug was first approved.
"This, in turn, helps predict whether the drug (as
manufactured) will be released in a patient's body as
expected - which is critical to ensuring proper and
consistent dosing of the patient."
The Quillivant samples formed clumps during the
reconstitution phase of the test.
Instead of investigating why there were clumps, Tris
"trained" its analysts to shake the water/drug mixture for
longer and only perform the test when "there is no foam in
the suspension," the lawsuit says.
Despite these changes, Quillivant continued to fail
resolution tests. Tris then stopped using this testing
method and switched to a new method.
"Alarmingly," the application states, "the new testing
method was not representative of real-world patient use and,
worse, violated the pharmacy reconstitution instructions
contained in the FDA-approved label for Quillivant."
As quality control problems continued, the companies told
the FDA a "misleading" and "convenient narrative to explain
away the problem."
Pfizer wanted to “fully realize the economic potential of
Texas Medicaid”
Meanwhile, Pfizer applied to Texas Medicaid to add
Quillivant to the program's list of preferred drugs - but
said nothing about the drug's ongoing and unresolved quality
control issues.
The FDA sent a warning letter to Pfizer on March 26, 2018,
informing the company that Quillivant "was adulterated
beginning in 2012 and continuing through 2018."
But "even after receiving this clear and unequivocal
assessment, neither Tris nor Pfizer alerted Texas Medicaid
decision-makers to the FDA's serious findings," the filing
states.
The lawsuit alleges that the companies avoided informing
Texas Medicaid of the problems because "Quillivant's status
with Texas Medicaid became a selling point." The statement
of claim stated:
"Tris and Pfizer both recognized that the Medicaid
business in Texas would be critical to Quillivant's success.
“In order to fully realize the economic potential of Texas
Medicaid, defendants needed Medicaid policymakers to add
Quillivant to the Vendor Drug Program (VDP) forms and
preferred drug list.
"These steps would effectively allow Medicaid providers to
prescribe Quillivant to their Medicaid patients and would
streamline the prescribing process by eliminating the
burdensome process of obtaining preauthorization for the
treating physician."
Pfizer predicted that sales of Quillivant in
Texas would increase significantly if the drug was added to
the Texas Medicaid Preferred Drug List because Texas is a
"populous state with a disproportionately high percentage of
children covered by Medicaid," according to the complaint.
The Civil Medicaid Fraud Division (link)
of Paxton's office took over the investigation.

Lisa Aeschlimann Reporter & Editor -- In Switzerland,
waiting times for ADHD clarifications are reaching new
highs. Those affected have to wait for up to a year, and
some doctor's offices no longer accept anyone. What are
the reasons?
If you're lucky, you'll get one within six months. If you're
unlucky, it's only a year from now: the appointment for the
ADHD clarification. In Switzerland, waiting times for
clarification of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD) have reached a new high. This is shown by a survey of
the Swiss newspaper "VIEW" ("BLICK").
The child and adolescent psychiatry department at the
Psychiatric University Hospital (Psychiatrische
Universitätsklinik - PUK) in Zurich, one of the largest
clinics, reports very high demand. Anyone who is not
classified as an emergency currently has to wait up to nine
months for an appointment. In order to bridge the waiting
time, the PUK Zurich has been offering online discussion
groups for young people since January.
At Basel and in the canton of Aargau the situation is
similar. At the Psychiatric Services Aargau (Psychiatrische
Dienste Aargau - PDAG) the waiting time for adults is nine
months, and "the trend is rising". For children and young
people, the number of registrations in outpatient clinics
has “more than doubled” in the last seven years, as senior
doctor Rainer Kment writes.
Some doctors offices have even imposed admission freezes. BrainArc,
a larger, specialized practice in Zurich, has not been
accepting any new patients since November [2025]. Most
recently, the waiting period was ten to twelve months.
Despite the admission freeze - which is prominently noted on
the website - there are around ten inquiries every day.
There is also an admission freeze in the Psybern special
clinic..
[Rich and "perfect" Switzerland]: Dozens of calls for
help every day
The ADHD organization Elpos Switzerland
receives dozens of requests every day for addresses where
they can get help. But free appointments are rare
everywhere. Elpos Switzerland reports that a six-month or
full year waiting time is now normal. To bridge the gap, the
organization refers those seeking help to self-help groups
that it has set up and runs for free.
One thing is clear: Awareness of the disease has recently
increased significantly - among experts and the general
public. “ADHD has long since arrived in our society,” writes
Susanne Walitza, director of child and adolescent psychiatry
at the PUK Zurich, and teachers and parents are sensitized
to it. Evelyn Herbrecht, chief physician at the University
Psychiatric Clinics in Basel, says not only has awareness of
mental disorders increased, but referrals from schools and
parents are also happening more quickly. It is striking that
the patients in child and adolescent psychiatry are getting
younger. Walitza: “We have more preschool children being
evaluated than years ago.”
Increasing pressure to perform and overstimulation
Greater awareness is just one reason for the rush for ADHD
evaluations. The increasing pressure to perform and the
sensory overload caused by social media also played a role,
several experts report. Walitza writes of an increase in
pathological media consumption among children and young
people.
Kment from the canton of Aargau writes: “Young people are
exposed to many external stimuli in our fast-moving,
digitalized world.” A high degree of adaptability is
required of them. Children and young people with ADHD fall
out of the norm because they hardly manage to meet the
increasing demands at school and family.
[ADHD children and youth are hitting and destroying without
end - and they are enjoying it].
[Since "Corona" pandemic: more online seminars and more
pressure and stress at Swiss universities]: Many more
students affected
It is also noteworthy that since the ["Corona"] pandemic,
students have been more likely to want to be tested for
ADHD. Stephan Kupferschmid, chief physician at the Meiringen
Private Clinic and board member of the Swiss
Association for ADHD, suspects the reason for
this is the push for digitalization during the pandemic:
Many lectures are only watched online, and there has also
been an acceleration in studies: "Students have to process
more and more stimuli." This is a challenge above all for
those who are not the best in their subject.

Despite the rush in the clinics: the number of ADHD
diagnoses has been constant for years, as experts emphasize.
Maybe the disorder is just a trend? There are indications of
this. Walitza writes that not everyone who suspects they
have ADHD actually has it. The increasing number of
clarifications also shows that cases without ADHD are
increasing in proportion to the number of inquiries.
Mr. Kupferschmid: “The demand for a clarification has
increased.” Mental disorders are no longer as stigmatized as
they used to be in former times. Some even have a certain
appeal - especially among younger people who openly report
on their “neurodiversity” on social media. It
is important to find the right balance here: not to use
mental illness as an excuse - but also not to stigmatize it.
In all cases, a differentiated and professional
clarification is required.

“We had over 500 who were not vaccinated and then we had

Andreas Schmid -- national editor -- Wastewater samples
show that Ritalin is widely used, especially in Zurich. Why
the measurements show such a strong increase is a mystery
even to experts.
Doctors prescribed Ritalin to over 92,000
children and adults last year. The diagnosis of attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been increasingly
made and treated with medication for a long time.
Nevertheless, the measurement results from wastewater samples
from sewage treatment plants, which the ETH water research
institute Eawag and the University of Lausanne regularly
present on behalf of the Federal Office of Public Health
(BAG), are surprising: In Zurich in particular, the values
for ritalinic acid reached a high in the first quarter of
this year, after an enormous increase since the measurement at
the end of 2023. Traces of ritalinic acid had already
increased significantly the year before.
The scientists report how many residues they find in
milligrams per day per 1,000 people. It is noticeable that the
quantities are significantly higher than at the other nine
Swiss measuring locations and are therefore well above the
national average.
Mysterious development
Even experts are astonished that the detection of ritalic acid
does not show a continuously increasing curve, but rather a
sudden one. The number of people prescribed medication for
ADHD has increased by 10,000 over the last four years.
Even experts have no conclusive reason for the discrepancy and
the wave-like development. BAG spokesman Daniel Dauwalder says
his office has no basis to speculate about the causes. And
adds: “We are working on developing a methodology to compare
trends in drug residues in wastewater with developments in
prescription.”
Possible explanations why there is an increase: increased
diagnoses of ADHD, faster medical prescription of Ritalin,
higher dosages per person, but also the use of the drug as a
party drug and as brain doping - Ritalin makes it possible
to learn with concentration over a long period of time.
Alwin Bachmann from the Swiss Addiction Coordination and
Specialist Center Infodrog suspects that the increase is due
to increased ADHD diagnoses in adults and more frequent
Ritalin use in non-medical contexts. Bachmann further points
out that, according to a study, young people aged 15 and
over take the drug more often to increase their attention.
A Zurich survey also shows that non-medically prescribed use
of Ritalin often occurs at home, in connection with studies
and work. Bachmann hält fest, es existiere ein
Onlineschwarzmarkt, über den verschiedenste Substanzen –
darunter Ritalin – gekauft werden könnten.

The current data from Swissmedic is clear: since 2021,
the use of ADHD medication in Switzerland has increased
by ten percent annually, as the “SonntagsZeitung”
reports. These are rates of increase like those that occurred
in the noughties.
At the time, many feared that Ritalin would be prescribed
carelessly. There were heated discussions and political
initiatives. But the experts disagreed and said that many ADHD
sufferers had been inadequately treated with medication, the
newspaper continues.
What is ADHD?
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a
neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent
inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. It usually begins
in childhood and can last into adulthood. The exact causes are
unknown, but genetic, neurological and environmental factors
play a role. Symptoms vary from person to person and can have
a significant impact on social, school or professional life.
Pressure to perform as a cause?
The current increase is also confirmed by wastewater
measurements and health insurance data. In the
“SonntagsZeitung” developmental pediatrician Oskar Jenni from
the Zurich Children’s Hospital confirms the increase in
developmental disorders such as ADHD. This development began
before the pandemic and is therefore not a direct result of
the Corona measures. He suspects the cause is more likely to
be the increased pressure to perform.
Environmental epidemiologists claim to have found another
cause. They fear that insecticide residues are responsible for
around a sixth of all ADHD cases. A smaller part is probably
due to the increased use of Ritalin to improve performance or
as a party drug, the newspaper continues. (chk)

March 29, 2025: "Increasingly more ADHD in adults"
https://science.orf.at/stories/3229528/

Translation:
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is
being diagnosed more and more frequently not only in
children but also in adults. A significant increase in
diagnoses and treatments is being felt in Austria, said a
specialist. The therapy must be very individual.
Andreas Heydwolff is a specialist in psychiatry and
psychotherapeutic medicine in Vienna and a member of the ADHS
Austria advanced training society. In his practice he has
specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in adults
for many years. There are enough inquiries. "We get calls
every day from people who want to come to us for diagnostics
or even treatment for ADHD. This number has increased
significantly in recent years, it can easily be 15 to 20
people a day," he said in an interview with science.ORF.at.
A development that cannot only be observed in Austria: A
British study recently showed that the number of ADHD
medication prescriptions in England is increasing by around 18
percent annually. “The fact that ADHD is diagnosed more
frequently today than it was a few years ago is a global
trend,” says Heydwolff.
More awareness among the population
But are there actually more people with ADHD today than there
were a few decades ago? "This question is often asked, and in
expert circles we mostly answer it by saying that the number
of those affected has probably remained relatively the same.
However, there are several factors that are contributing to
the increase in demand."
ADHD diagnoses in adults are increasing
Audio no longer available for legal reasons.
On the one hand, according to Heydwolff, there is now a
greater awareness of ADHD among the population - people who
would previously have been simply labeled as stupid or lazy
are now more likely to recognize that their problems may be
due to ADHD. "Public awareness has changed significantly. Many
sufferers are also making each other aware that they might
have ADHD and encouraging each other to get it checked out."
On the other hand, the demands on society today are completely
different than they were a few decades ago. "In the world of
work today, much more precision is required than before. Those
affected who cannot concentrate so well can hardly find work
that is suitable for them, and that is where many ADHD
patients reach their limits," said the Vienna health insurance
specialist.
Difficult diagnoses
Recognizing ADHD in adults is often difficult because the
disorder manifests itself in very different ways and with
different symptoms. Some sufferers have difficulty
concentrating and are easily distracted, others are
hyperactive or impulsive. Although hyperactivity is often less
severe in adults with ADHD than in children, many sufferers
feel restless and/or have a strong urge to move.
ADHD also often occurs together with other psychiatric
illnesses. “75 to 80 percent of those affected by ADHD also
meet the diagnostic criteria for at least one other
psychiatric illness,” explained Heydwolff. This often makes
the diagnosis even more difficult.
Disturbed dopamine balance [gland damage!]
If someone has been struggling with concentration problems or
other ADHD symptoms for many years, a diagnosis in a clinical
psychological practice or, if medication treatment is desired,
a specialist medical practice makes sense. "Adults, including
young adults, have usually already tried everything they can
do to compensate for their weaknesses. Medication treatment is
often a big step that can make a lot of things easier."
But how do the medications help those affected? A central
aspect of ADHD is the neurotransmitter dopamine. "The frontal
lobe is a very important control point where many of the
things we need in everyday life take place, such as focusing,
sustained attention and impulse control. In ADHD, dopamine is
broken down more quickly than in the average population for
mainly genetic reasons. This leads to the typical symptoms
such as concentration problems and hyperactivity." Drug
treatment aims to slow down this rapid breakdown and thus
alleviate the symptoms. “If you find the right dose, ideally
you can ‘function’ like people without ADHD,” says Heydwolff.
Individual treatment approaches
However, not all adults with ADHD are dependent on medication.
In addition to medication, there are also other approaches
that can help - depending on how severe the patient's ADHD is.
Behavioral therapies or coaching can help to create more
structure in everyday life and thus overcome challenges
better. “Which approach is the right one varies from patient
to patient and should be clarified in advance with experts.”

The age of those affected does not play any role. Even those
people who only decide to get diagnosed when they retire can
benefit from treatment. “It is a great relief for many people
when peculiarities that were previously not associated with
the diagnosis suddenly make sense and you realize that you are
not just lazy or unfocused.”
Supply bottlenecks are problematic
According to Heydwolff, in Austria there is still a severe
shortage of specialist staff who can diagnose and treat ADHD
in both adults and children. More training in this area and
specialized facilities would be important to improve care. “It
would be ideal if we had at least one large treatment center
in every federal state in order to expand the non-drug
treatment options there, among other things.”
One thing is clear: Individually tailored treatments can often
greatly improve the quality of life of those affected. “For me
as a practitioner, it is really a pleasure to see how
beautifully people can develop who have gone through life with
low self-confidence and the feeling that they are not a
full-fledged part of society,” said the Viennese health
insurance specialist Heydwolff.

Speed Is Not Medicine: How Pycnogenol Offers Real Hope for
Children with ADHD - 22. Oktober 2025
Translation:
This is what Sayer Ji, founder of “Greenmedinfo” writes.
The administration of Ritalin & Co. is “ethically
scandalous and medically reckless”. At the same time,
Pycnogenol would be a valuable extract being ignored.
By Torsten Engelbrecht
There are myths surrounding the drug Ritalin.
Researchers claim that prescription medications for people
with so-called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD) lead to improved concentration and cognitive
performance. As a result, they are often taken by students
without this diagnosed disorder (see TN article “ADHD
medications like Ritalin reduce student performance”).
And not only that. According to the 2022 “Prescription
Report” from the Techniker Krankenkasse, the
proportion of 12 to 17-year-olds in Germany who were
prescribed psychotropic drugs rose from 3.5 percent in
2017 to around 4.3 percent in 2020. This number does not
refer exclusively to ADHD medications, but to psychotropic
drugs as a whole. But ADHD medication makes up a large
part of this – according to the report, “around 70 percent
of psychotropic drug prescriptions” for school children.
If you consider that there are 13 to 14 million
children and young people aged 0 to 17 in Germany,
560,000 to 600,000 of them (4.3 percent) are prescribed
psychotropic drugs - and a large proportion of them are
prescribed ADHD drugs such as Ritalin.
But why this real “hype”? Critics have been
calling Ritalin “children’s cocaine” for years. Robert
Whitaker, author of the award-winning book “Anatomy Of An
Epidemic,” told me in an interview in 2013 (link):
“The New York Times recently ran a story about a
teenager who became addicted to Ritalin. The difference
between Ritalin and cocaine is that Ritalin stays in the
body longer, but their mechanism of action is pretty much
the same."
A study published in 2023 also found that ADHD
medications such as Ritalin impair concentration and
performance (TN reported - link).
Greenmedinfo has now taken up the explosive topic
and published a long article (link)
“about the dark truth about the administration” of Ritalin
& Co. At the same time, it reports on a “natural
extract that promotes brain development rather than
hinders it”. The text says:
“Every day, millions of children are prescribed
amphetamine-based medications for ADHD – a practice that
is ethically scandalous and medically reckless. ADHD
stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin are essentially
pharmaceutical 'speed', almost identical in effect to
illegal narcotics, and are being administered to
adolescent children on an unprecedented scale."
“The pathologization of normal child behavior,” which
is driven by aggressive marketing, dubious
diagnostics and institutional complacency, is also highly
problematic. Greenmedinfo even speaks of an “ADHD
industrial complex” made up of pharmaceutical companies,
paid psychiatrists and interest groups, all of which
spread misleading claims while suppressing dissenting
voices that question the medication of children.
“ADHD as a diagnosis often reifies behaviors that
indicate underlying problems – nutrient deficiencies,
environmental stressors, trauma or neurotoxic exposure –
rather than an independent brain disease,” says Sayer Ji,
founder of Greenmedinfo and author of the article. The side
effects of stimulants ranged from insomnia and stunted
growth to addiction and psychosis. “Prescribing
amphetamine-class substances to children is a crisis, not a
cure,” warns Ji.
But Ji doesn't just criticize. He also brings into
play Pycnogenol, an extract from the bark of the French
maritime pine, a substance that “represents a scientifically
validated, safe and holistic alternative”. Research shows
that Pycnogenol improves attention and reduces hyperactivity
without the dangers of stimulants (see here). Ji:
"As a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
agent, it restores neurological balance instead of
hijacking dopamine pathways - with virtually no side
effects or risk of addiction."
Pycnogenol also supports the neurochemical balance “in a
gentler way”. Research would show that it can regulate
the levels of stress hormones and neurotransmitters towards
normal range. Ji:
“A European study (link)
found that taking Pycnogenol for a month reduced elevated
adrenaline and norepinephrine levels in ADHD children - a
sign of calming an overstimulated system.
At the same time, dopamine, the neurotransmitter for
concentration, was slightly increased, but without the
rollercoaster effects caused by stimulants. In fact,
Pycnogenol steers the brain toward balance rather than
putting it into overdrive.”
A 2008 review (link)
also concluded that nutrition can generally have positive
effects on children diagnosed with ADHD. It says:
“Numerous studies have looked at the causes and
treatment options for attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD). Suboptimal amounts of nutrients and
sensitivities to certain foods and food additives were also
identified. This report reviews this research and provides
an up-to-date report on clinical studies on zinc, iron,
magnesium, pycnogenol, omega-3 fatty acids and food
intolerances.
The literature search was conducted using PubMed, ISI Web of
Knowledge, and Google Scholar and included studies published
before April 2008. Although further research is needed,
current evidence supports evidence that nutrition and diet
influence these children's behavior and learning."

The number of initial ADHD diagnoses in adults has risen
rapidly in Germany, according to an analysis by health
insurance companies
Significantly more adults in Germany receive an initial
diagnosis of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders
(ADHD) today than ten years ago. The incidence, i.e. the
number of initial diagnoses per 10,000 inhabitants, increased
by 199 percent from 2015 to 2024 - from around
8.6 to 25.7 per 10,000, as shown by a study by the Central
Institute for Statutory Health Insurance, which was published
in the “Deutsches Ärzteblatt International”.
The number of first diagnoses has increased particularly
sharply since 2021, especially among women. In 2021 it was
12.7 per 10,000, in 2024 it was 25.7, regardless
of gender. The increase is not a purely German phenomenon. In
the Canadian province of Ontario, for example, the number of
annual prescriptions for ADHD medication increased by
157 percent between 2015 and 2023, a study shows.
The evaluation in the Ärzteblatt is based on billing data from
those with statutory health insurance aged 18 and over. Data
from 17 associations of statutory health insurance physicians
were used. The data for 2024 is preliminary because not all
initial diagnoses have been validated, it said.
Insured persons who have not received a diagnosis in the
previous two years are considered to be diagnosed as cases for
the first time in an examination year. In addition, the
diagnosis must be marked as confirmed and documented.
According to the criteria, it may be that the patients
examined were diagnosed with ADHD again after a long break,
but not for the very first time.
People under 40 had the highest rate of new diagnoses
throughout the period. The incidence was higher in men than in
women, regardless of age. Over the years, the difference
between men and women became smaller and smaller, and by 2024
they were almost equal. It can be assumed that in many cases
the onset of symptoms was much earlier and that these were
mostly delayed initial diagnoses, according to the study. This
means that those affected had ADHD in their childhood, but did
not receive a diagnosis.
Gender differences in ADHD
It is known that female sufferers are less noticeable in
childhood, explained Swantje Matthies from the Freiburg
University Hospital, who was not involved in the analysis
herself. They would therefore be diagnosed less frequently. It
is therefore particularly plausible for girls and women that
they only received an initial diagnosis in adulthood.
Until 2016, the frequency of ADHD diagnoses among children and
adolescents was fairly stable. Why have so many more people
been diagnosed with ADHD since 2021 than before? The study
authors have several explanations for this.
On the one hand, it is possible that there is a greater
awareness of the disease in society. On the other hand, a new
diagnosis code was introduced in 2019. Cases that may have
existed before could now be more visible because they are
better recorded. Another factor could be the corona pandemic
and its effects on the psyche.
Since ADHD is associated with considerable suffering and has
an impact on quality of life, the authors consider the
increase in new diagnoses to be positive - because this means
that more people affected are seeking therapy.
The disease is getting a lot of attention in the media, said
Matthies. “There is also a risk that the concept will be
‘watered down’.” It is possible that people identify with
characteristics, characteristics and experiences typical of
ADHD, even though they do not meet the diagnostic criteria. A
diagnosis requires a detailed anamnesis and assessment by
experts.
Social avoidance has two sides, said Alexandra Philipsen from
the University Hospital of Bonn. On the one hand, content
could increase sensitivity to ADHD. On the other hand, they
could lower the threshold for being diagnosed based on a false
self-diagnosis. “It would be nice to educate people on social
media together with experts and create formats together.”
Typical ADHD symptoms
Typical ADHD symptoms are severe attention and
concentration problems, severe impulsivity and pronounced
physical restlessness (hyperactivity) [ADHD boys hit all
girls in schools, tear them on their hair, push girls in
rivers - just for fun - when not healed with natural
medicine the youths will be rioters and violators]. The
symptoms can vary in severity and do not all have to occur at
the same time. In order to really be considered ADHD, the
abnormalities must occur for at least six months and in
various areas of life and affect the person affected, as the
Ministry of Health explains.
Not every person diagnosed with ADHD needs therapy, says
Andreas Reif from the University Hospital Frankfurt. In his
opinion, if treatment is necessary, drug therapy is the first
choice in adulthood.
According to Reif, whether the rate of new diagnoses will
decrease again at some point depends on the extent to which
patients are correctly identified in childhood and
adolescence. In the USA, for example, the proportion of people
with ADHD and the proportion of people with an ADHD diagnosis
are increasingly converging.
In Germany, too, the data shows a trend that the “continuing
underdiagnosis of ADHD in adults is slowly reducing,” confirms
Marcel Romanos from the University Hospital of Würzburg.
Experts assume that around 2.5 percent of adults in Germany
have ADHD.
The increasing numbers of ADHD are still a challenge for the
medical care system. In Bonn, for example, the waiting time
for an appointment for an ADHD diagnosis is over a year, says
Alexandra Philipsen. In order to cope with the flood of cases,
it is not enough to rely on psychiatrists and
psychotherapists. “Family doctors are needed who have often
known the affected families for a long time and can use
initial screening tools,” says Philipsen. These could then be
referred specifically to experts.

Rowena Goebel -- Zurich -- The smartphone is an important
means of communication - but it also has a lot of addictive
potential. With devastating effects on the psyche.
- Heavy cell phone and internet use can significantly
worsen ADHD symptoms.
- It can even cause people without ADHD to develop similar
symptoms.
- An expert explains when the alarm bells should ring.
ADHD assessments are booming (link),
more and more medication is being prescribed for it (link)
and the number of adults receiving a diagnosis is also
increasing (link).
The reasons for this are different. On the one hand, social
awareness has increased - more people are aware of signs of
ADHD. This means that the number of those affected who
actually get a diagnosis is increasing.
But there are also factors that can actually make symptoms
worse and therefore more noticeable.
One of them: the cell phone. Addictive games and social media
algorithms (link)
can have devastating effects, especially for those affected by
ADHD.
But no one is safe from that. Heavy cell phone use can even
cause people who don't have ADHD to develop similar symptoms.
There is a high demand for ADHD assessment
appointments
How widespread concentration difficulties etc. are can be
seen at the Zurich Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and
Psychotherapy Clinic.
As director Susanne Walitza tells Nau.ch, the demand for
ADHD assessment appointments has been high there for over
15 years. During this period it has even increased
slightly.
It has not been confirmed that social media, games and
other digital media have a direct impact on the demand for
ADHD clarifications. However, it is obvious - because it
is now known that intensive cell phone use can have
devastating consequences for those affected by ADHD, but
also for people without ADHD.
When the cell phone triggers ADHD suffering
The psychiatrist confirms: “Intensive or inappropriate use
of cell phones and the Internet can increase existing,
previously less noticeable ADHD symptoms.”
This means that even someone who doesn't know that they
have ADHD and hardly feels any distress can only have
problems when they use their cell phone.
And people with untreated ADHD of all people have an
increased risk of developing problematic media use, as
Walitza explains.
“There is also evidence that treating ADHD can help reduce
excessive use of digital media.”
But at what point does usage behavior actually become
harmful?
