Habitat
Countries, habitat
Aspic vipers live from Northeastern of Spain (Pyrenees
[web05]) passing southern and Middle France to Switzerland
and all over Italy (except for Sardinia [web06]) down to
western Slovenia, in the north up to the Black Forest in
Germany. In Switzerland, the Central Plateau is
viper-free. However, they live in Jura Mountains as well
as in the cantons of Geneva, Valais and Ticino, as well as
the Geneva Lake bank, the upper part of Canton of Bern
(Berner Oberland) and in the south valleys of Canton of
the Grisons. It has been driven out in the canton of Basel
Country in the past 20 years [it may be assumed because of
motorway construction]. Where Aspic viper and common
European viper live in the same area, the Aspic viper
colonizes the warmer areas below and the normal European
viper the cooler areas above [web03]. As a result, Aspic
vipers live above all on the sunny slopes under bushes,
under stones, [in cracks], in light forests, in scree
shafts, rock corridors, avalanche corridors, dwarf shrubs,
brook banks, river banks, in dry stone walls, in stone
heaps, in hedges, in bushy forest edges, in corridors from
high-voltage lines, on railway dams, dry meadows and
pastures. Depending on the circumstances, the sunny zones
and hunting zones are considerably apart [web04]. In the
mountains, the Aspic viper rises on sunny slopes up to
3000m [web18].
Colors, shapes, behavior
The Aspic viper (lat.: Vipera aspis - also Vipera comune
[web06]) does not differ much from non-toxic snakes in
terms of appearance. It may reach over 20 years of age.
The coloring varies strongly, gray with the basic color,
brown, beige, yellowish or reddish [web01], in Spain also
gray-bluish [web07], with all intermediate tones, and the
pattern is black [arrows, triangles, diamonds, changing
parts of diamonds, with or without a center line etc.]
[web01]. The pattern is a wave line or a zigzag tape in
geometric shapes [web18]. Sometimes the Aspic viper is
also completely black, e.g. in the Alps in Switzerland,
less often in the Jura mountains [web01]. The young
animals are colored brightly, and when becoming more and
more adult, the color becomes darker. Depending on the
climate, they are born from August to October and then
hibernating. The females need to build up the fat reserves
up to 3 years until they become fertile again [web02].

[web24]
The Aspic viper becomes up to 90cm long, the males longer
than the females. Aspic vipers are mostly daily under way,
sometimes also nocturnal, with a lot of sunbathing. Wind
is avoided. Hideouts during the day are animal buildings,
root caves or under stones and in the bushes [web05].
Aspis vipers live in hiding places in the bushes or under
stones, or they lie down on the sun. During heat periods,
they remain hidden all day long. The enemies of the Aspic
viper are birds of prey (common buzzard [web05]) and crows
(carrion crow, northern raven [web05]). Young animals are
sometimes also eaten, the murderers of young animals are
straying domestic cats, hedgehogs, martens (fitch, stone
martens, badger [web05]) or chickens as well as smooth
snake [web02].
In winter there is a hibernation in frost-proof mouse cave
channels or in crevices [web02] in hiding places with an
average of 8 degrees [web05].
Similarities to other snakes
You can often only distinguish them from other snakes
controlling the head. Quote (translation): "Four species
occurring in Europe are similar to the Aspic viper, so
that they can be confused with this type during outdoor
watching. To in contrast to the Aspic viper, the common
European viper (Vipera berus) and the Meadow viper (Vipera
ursinii) have no elevated face front. And in contrast to
the Aspic viper, Horned viper (Vipera ammodytes) and
Snub-nosed viper (Vipera latatei) have a clear horn on
their snout." [web05]
Hunting and bite
The hunting of the Aspic viper
For hunting, the Aspic viper is without any movement on
the lurk [web05]. Victims become small mammals such as
field mice and pointed mice [web02] and lizards [web05],
exceptionally also birds and amphibians. The young Aspic
vipers are fully developed and eat small lizards [web02].
After the bite, the prey is released and pursued until the
prey dies, and then the prey is devoured with the head in
front [web05].
People are only bitten if you take the Aspic viper
[accidentally] in your hand [i.e. when the hand wants to
have a hold in a crevice or is looking for something in a
bush where an Aspic viper rests] or when persons are
stepping on an Aspic viper [web02]. The warning behavior
of the Aspic viper is to straighten the upper body with
hiss [web05].
Aspic viper Germany in defense position [3]
Funny and conspicuous movements of persons trigger the
Aspic viper to fly [web02]. Stamping on the ground
rather don't drive Aspic vipers and common European
vipers away, but the visual contact is crucial
[web15]. Aspic vipers flee from humans. In a dead end,
the Aspic viper goes up and is hissing. However, if
the Aspic viper is not left in peace, it will give a
toxic bite [web13].
Bites against people
The vipers of common European viper (Vipera berus) and
of Aspic viper (Vipera aspis) can fold their poison
teeth [web26].
Translation: "Deaths are rare, children and the
elderly are particularly at risk." [web16]
Translation: "In Switzerland, from 1967 to 1983, a
total of 113 bites were reported by Vipera berus and
Vipera aspis. Lethal was no poisoning, but 14 patients
had severe symptoms."
"Between 1980 and 1984, three patients died of the
effects of a viper bite in Italy. Only 8 % of all
bitten patients (286 cases are documented) developed severe
symptoms."
"In 1990, a total of 102 snake bites were reported by
local snakes. 5 cases were difficult,
an one patient died." [web18]
The dry bite against people
When a bite of Aspic viper or common European viper
remains without swelling after 2 hours, it was a "dry
bite" without snake poison and you had good luck
[web15].
Prevention against viper bites of Aspic viper
-- Put good shoes which are impenetrable for the Aspic
vipers [web02], the shoes have to cover the ankles
[web06]
-- Put on long pants and socks [web06]
-- On sunny slopes, you should always be prepared to
be confronted with reptiles such as Aspic vipers, so
be careful where you are standing and where you put
your hands [web06] [NEVER go with your hands into
bushes or in rock cleavages without control before,
always check with a stick first]
-- If an Aspic viper or common European viper is
sunbathing simply lying at a place, you should keep a
distance of 2m and continue your hike, certainly do
not bother it [web14]
The poison of the Aspic viper (Vipera
aspis)
The poison of Aspic viper
-- The poison of the Aspic viper (Vipera aspis) is similar
to the common European viper (Vipera berus), but is
stronger [web05] and sometimes also contains nerve toxins
[web30]
-- The poison storage is 9-10 mg, that's not much [web05]
-- A bite of the Aspic viper as well as the common
European viper can be dangerous for children [web13]
-- Multiple full bits (food bite [web12], hunting bite
[web24]) of several Aspic vipers can also kill adults
[web05]
--
Blood toxins: A high proportion of the
Aspic viper snake poison is blood poison (hemotoxic) with
various proteases [web05]
--
Nerve poison (neurotoxins) [web05]:
Neurotoxins of the phospholipase A2 are sometimes present,
but not always [web30]
--
Cell poison (cytotoxic substances)
[web08] kill body cells [web10]
--
Necrotic poisons [web08] bring tissue to
die, e.g. due to lack of oxygen [web11]
--
Proteolytic poisons [web08] split
proteins [web09]
--
Toxic enzymes reduce tissues [web08]:
kininogenase (enzyme) [web30]
--
Hyaluronidases [web30]
--
Proteases [web30]: destroy tissue
--
Protrombin-activating factors [web30]

viper, the poison of the Aspic viper mainly has a toxic
effect against the blood and the blood vessel system, is
cytotoxic (contains necrotic or proteolytic toxins);

originally were created to accelerate the digestive
processes of the prey." [web08]

The symptoms after an aspic viper bite
First symptoms:
-- Swelling around the bite area (edema [web16]) [web05,
web18] with bluish discoloration because the blood is
destroyed [web05]
-- Strong swellings are developing spreading from the bite
zone to the center [trunk] of the body [web13]
-- Swelling (edema formation) at the bite point [web18]
-- Most snake bites are swelling fast and then during 8 to
10 days the swelling goes down and that was it [web16],
but in rare cases the development after a snake bite of
Aspic viper or common European viper continues to go with
"systemic complications" [web16]:
-- Pain at the bite point [Web18]
Medium symptoms:
-- pale face [web21]
-- inflammatory reactions [web06]
-- Muscle cramp with pain over several days at the bite
point [Web06]
-- tingling [web06]
-- nausea [web06, web18]
-- vomiting (emesis) [web06, web18] with colic-like
cramps, in the end also vomiting of bile and blood [web21]
-- dizziness [web16]
-- abdominal pain [web18]
-- diarrhea [web18]
-- Low blood pressure [Web13, Web18]
-- palpitations [web13], fast heartbeat (tachycardia)
[web14, web18]
-- deep blood pressure (hypotension) [web14], weak pulse
[web21]
-- cramps [Web13, Web16]
-- troubles of consciousness (web13], consciousness
disorders [web18]
-- violent pain [on the bite arm] [web14, web31],
necrotization of the bite point with dead tissue [web16,
web31], the necrotization usually only takes place if the
bite point has been treated incorrectly. Translation:
"When NO manipulation is carried out at the bite site,
necrosis is developing only very rarely." [web18]
Serious symptoms with death consequences:
-- eye damage: power of sight is "severely damaged"
[web31]
-- blood toxins (hemotoxins) destroy the blood [web18],
blood clotting disorders [web14, Web31]
oo tendency to coagulate (blood clot) in the circulation
system [web31]
oo coagulation weakness in wounds [wounds don't heal
anymore] [web31]
-- The blood poison destroys the blood cells [red blood
cells] and the blood poison destroys also the circulatory
walls [vessel walls] [web05, web08] "Blood vessels are
attacked" [web29] with "necrotic or proteolytic toxins"
[web08]
-- Bleedings [web16]: Systemic bleeding [web18] without
end such as: menstruation without end, internal bleeding
of organs, vascular walls [web17] or in the mouth [web16]
-- lymph channel inflammation [web21]
-- kidney dysfunction, especially due to too low blood
pressure (hypotension) [web18], kidney damage due to the
glomerular structure of the snake poison [web31]
-- allergic shock [web06,15,18]: swelling of the
respiratory tract (allergic symptom) [web14], strong
sweating, shortness of breath, cold sweat [web15]
-- allergic shock [web06,15,16]: "Allergic reaction up to
an anaphylactic reaction" [web16, web18], anaphylactic
shock [web18]
-- sleepiness during the day [always tired] [web29]
-- unconsciousness [web18]
-- nerve damage [web18]
-- the nerve poison provokes [paralysis and thus]:
shortness of breath+heart problems [web05], breathing
difficulties, difficulty in swallowing [web31]
-- paralysis [web13, web31]
-- heart damage [web18], damage to the heart muscle
[web16]
-- shock kidney (kidney failure [web19]) with all
complications [web16] [snake venom is passing kidneys and
damaging them]
-- respiratory paralysis, respiratory arrest [web06]
-- circulatory collapse (collapse) [web06]
-- death from oxygen undersupply in the blood [web31]
[multiple organ failure]
-- death by muscle damage [web31]
-- death through breathing paralysis [web31] [paralysis of
diaphragm]
Text examples:
Translation: "It's bite can provoke respiratory
paralysis." (orig. italiano: "Il suo morso può portare ad
una paralisi respiratoria") [web06]
Translation 01 (orig. italiano): "The bite of the Aspic
viper (Vipera aspis, Vipera comune) provokes inflammatory
reactions and painful muscle cramps at the bite point that
can last for a few days. Moderate symptoms are also
nausea, vomiting and tingling. Heavy symptoms are shock,
paralysis and circulatory collapse." [web06]
Translation 02 (orig. German): "According to the report of
the Bremen University, the typical symptoms after a real
toxic snake bite are: strong swelling gradually spreading
from the center of the bite to the middle of the body. In
rarer cases, however, symptoms can occur such as nausea,
vomiting, low blood pressure, palpitations, cramps,
troubles of consciousness or even paralysis." [web13]
Translation 03 (orig. German): "The poison of common
European viper and Aspic viper works primarily in the
tissue, says Mrs. Joan Fuchs, mayor assistant with
specialty in poisoning animals at the organization Tox
Info Suisse. "They are certainly a different caliber than
toxic snakes on other continents, but you shouldn't
underestimate them." In the event of a bite, the tissue
can be strongly swelled, with the greater amount of poison
or increased sensitivity of the bitten victim, other
symptoms such as racing heart and low blood pressure are
possible, as well as allergic symptoms with swelling of
the airways, the doctor explains. Also blood coagulation
disorders would occur. The most important thing is not to
manipulate the bite, so, no cuts, no blocking bandages and
not to suck the bite out. The latter maneuver could
provoke a bacteria infection in the mouth, Fuchs said. Add
to this, the venom is distributed into the tissue fast.
Whether a snake bite causes pain is different. According
to Fuchs, affected patients reported that the whole thing
was very painful, but others affected also reported that
they practically did not notice it." [web14]
Translation 04 (orig. German): "Nevertheless, an
additional allergic reaction to the poison can lead to an
allergic shock that can lead to death when the victim
remains untreated. In the case of shock signs such as
strong sweating, shortness of breath and cold sweat, the
legs should be raised and the victim should look for a
doctor immediately." [web15]
Translation 05 (orig. German): "Most of the time, the
intoxication by a bite of the Aspic viper is particularly
accompanied by local symptoms. There are pains on the
bitten limb with a fast edema on the bitten limb with
blush discoloration. The symptoms usually decrease within
8 to 10 days. Systemic complications can be dizziness,
emesis, tachycardia and hypotension up to collapse.
Furthermore, rarely can occur bleeding (e.g. the oral
mucosa) and cramps. Severe neurotoxic effects are not to
be expected. Damage to the heart muscle and the
complication of a shock kidney are possible. Necrotization
of the bite point [turning black] occurs rarely and mostly
after manipulation of it. The risk of an allergic reaction
up to the anaphylactic reaction is given. Deaths are rare,
children and older people are particularly at risk."
[web16]
Translation 06: orig. German: "Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting,
abdominal pain and diarrhea occur. In more than 80 % of
the patients, these symptoms occurred within two hours.
The patients sweat, are pale, have tachycardia [racing
heart] and hypotension [low blood pressure]. A shock
rarely occurs. There are also rare disorders of
consciousness up to complete UNconsciousness. Anaphylactic
reactions up to anaphylactic shock are possible. Usually
the sensitization does not take place by the same type of
viper. One admits a cross antigenity. It is noticeable
that only a third of the bitten patients report about pain
at the bite site. Edema formation is very common and
occurs within two hours (Vipera aspis and Vipera berus).
Even with severe intoxication, systemic bleeding is rare.
In the toxins of European vipers have been found
neurotoxins. Usually there is no effect after a bite.
Researchers presume that the amount of neurotoxin [nerve
venom] is too little. But singular cases are known that
had neurologic symptoms. Also Myotoxins [heart
venom] have also been found in the toxins. Effects have
also been described very rarely here and the small amount
in the toxin mixture is also believed here. Heart damages
were reported by poisoning by vipers. However, the causal
connection is unclear. Kidney dysfunction is rare. When
they occur, they are primarily consequences of the
hypotension. See more here at studies [
link]."
[web18]
Translation 07 (orig. German): "The poisoning symptoms
include rapidly spreading acute pain, followed by edema
and discoloration. Within a few hours, severe hemorrhagic
necrosis can occur. The eyesight can be severely impaired,
may be due to a destruction of blood and blood vessels in
the eyes. The venom has an coagulant [in the circulation
system] as well as an anticoagulant effect [wounds don't
heal well any more]. The poison can also affect the
glomerular structure, which can lead to death by kidney
failure.
According to Cheymol et al. (1973), the poison is damaging
the neuromuscular contractions in in-vitro preparations.
The lack of this neurotoxic effect would point out that
other causes had a fatal effect when the cardiovascular
system is involved, as for example a direct [heart] muscle
damage or loss of oxygen in metabolism affairs. At the
other hand, Gonzalez (1991) reported that the victims
developed neurotoxic symptoms in two cases, including
breathing and swallowing problems as well as paralysis of
the bitten limbs." [web31]

Translation 08 (orig. German): "The typical course of
a bite of common European viper is as follows: After
the bite, severe pain occurs at the bite site, but
also anesthesia of the bitten limb was observed. In
the course of the next few hours the bitten body part
swells violently, extremities can swell up to the
double or triple of it's extent. The swelling usually
turns dark bluish (compare with Lachesis) accompanied
by ecchymoses. The swellings are very hard and don't
give in when fingers are pressed there. At the bite
zone, a gangrenous ulcer can develop. The skin becomes
cold, livid and is covered by cold sweat. Big thirst
for cold water is developping as a striking general
symptom. Other general symptoms are similar to other
snake venoms (Lachesis, Naja, Crotalus): low blood
pressure [circulation system is damaged+blood is lost
in the system], extreme frailty, fainting,
accelerated, thread-shaped pulse [blood is lost in the
system], nausea and vomiting [by kidney and liver
damage], diarrhea [by intoxication] with an
involuntary departure of stool and also from urine [no
control of muscles any more], collapse and in fatal
cases transition to coma." [web28]

Vipera aspis in France - the effectis like a Corona
vaccination
from: Toxicology in emergency medicine (Toxikologie in der
Notfallmedizin):

[web21]
Translation 09 (orig. German): "Medium poisoning by Vipera
aspic - An adult person with unknown age was bitten into
the middle of the right middle finger when catching a
snake in France (Haute-Savoie). This Vipera aspic was 44cm
long. Both poison teeth had penetrated the skin. Only
after 25 minutes a swelling was developed, but this
swelling was heavy . Another 10 minutes later an edema had
formed at the ankle of the hand back, 4cm of size.
Movements of the hand were painful now. Then the gum in
the upper jaw was swollen after one our, as also the
complete throat zone was swollen within one our. Also
swallowing was difficult now (angioneurotic edema). The
hand was completely swollen now and first cramps in the
abdomen came all five minutes. The bitten victim returned
to his hotel by foot. Reaching it 1 1/2 hours after the
bite and went fast to bed. Pains came now in the right
shoulder. Additionally pains came in the right arm up to
the upper arm. Cramps of the abdomen were more and more
only with some minutes pause. Several times vomiting came.
Last vomiting was with bile and blood. Now also diarrhea
came 3 hours after the bite with vomiting and abdominal
cramps. Short time after, the patient was found by his
wife, he was sweating, colic cramps, and pale and swollen
face. Pulse could hardly be felt. Now, the patient was
transported to a clinic. Diarrea and abdominal cramps went
on. Only five hours after the bite the patient got 3mg
Cortisone intravenously (the dose was much too small!) and
intramuscular spasmolytica were given (intravenous would
have had a faster and more effective effect). Infusion was
given with a glucose solution. The patient himself
rejected an antiserum therapy because of being afraid of
an anaphylactic reaction.
After two hours vomiting and diarrhea stopped. On the
right forearm, lymph channels were visible as red strips,
and the edema on the right hand was very big. Reduction of
edema pains was processed after 7 1/2 hours with acetyl
salicylic acid. The forearm had now a very warm
temperature. After giving 500ml of a glucose solution, now
1 liter of isotonic salt solution was applied. After 9 1/2
hours of the bite, the patient could sleep for 7 hours.
After awakaning he felt really better. Forearm and hand
were swollen yet, but the inflammation of the lymph
channels could not be detected yet. 17 hours after the
bite the laboratory levels were nearly in the normal
range, and also ECG showed no pathologic symptoms. Now the
patient could leave for going home. Three days after the
bite the edema on the hand had completely disappeared. The
forearm was aching at this time a little bit yet when
pressure was given on it."

Translation 10 (orig. German): In Tuscany [Italy], a woman
51 years old was bitten near her house by a Vipera aspic
francisredi (appr. 50cm long) into the basic limb of her
third toe of her left foot. After 30 minutes, she arrived
a clinic with the following symptoms: dyspnea [lack of
breathing], emesis [vomiting], diarrhea, and somnolent
[dowsy]. Blood pressure was at 80/60 mm Hg. Tongue was
swollen, bite zone was swollen. Laboratory levels showed
no specialties. As the patient was known by anamnesis to
have an allergy against insect bites, the antiserum was
not applied. She got atropine, antobiotics, cortisone, and
ranitidine as also colloidal solution. After 3 1/2 hours
she got a dopamine infusion, but had to be taken off
because of extra systoles [heart beat troubles]. Next day
her general state was better, but some neurotoxic effects
could be detected. The patient had accommodation troubles
(blurred view [web23]), doubled view and ptosis
[paralysis] of both eye lids. The foot was slightly
swollen yet. All laboratory levels were in the normal
range. Two days after the bite, the ptosis and double view
were reducing. But now the swelling of the foot had
extended up to the knee. The patient hardly indicated any
pain with all this. Doppler sonography resulted in no
pathologic finding. The third day also ptosis of eye lids
had almost completely reduced and the patient was leaving
the clinic by her own wish.

Remedies against snake venom of Aspic
viper
-- NO binding, NO cutting, NO suction [web13], but:
-- Remove rings and watches [web14]
-- The victim is to be transported in a horizontal
situation for medical treatment [web13]
-- Arrange a medical examination as soon as possible
[web06]
-- An Aspic viper bite can be problematic and should
definitely be assessed by a doctor [web02]
-- You can use an unspecific antidote (
antivenin)
that acts against the poison of all types of vipers
[web05]
-- Apply an
antiserum [web13]
Text examples:
Translation 11 (orig. German): "Instead, the bitten victim
should drink enough liquid and should very fast be
transported in a horizontal position to a medical doctor.
There he can be processed an antiserum." [web13]
Translation 12 (orig. German): "The affected limb should
be immobilized, remove any rings and watches and
immediately go to the hospital." If you are in the
mountains, it is certainly advisable not to hike two hours
further, but to turn back immediately. If this is not
possible at the moment, call Rega [Swiss helicopter
service] for help." [web14]
Translation 13 (orig. German): "After the toxic snake
bite, the victim should keep cool about the bite zone.
Binding of the bitten limb (compression binding) is
discussed controversially, eventually the local toxic
effect is even reinforced by it. What is important is
calling an emergency doctor. The patient has to be
transported in a horizontal position. Normally a therapy
against the symptoms is sufficient. A tetanus prophylaxis
should be performed. When a shock happens, this will be
treated with intensive care - among others with
glucocorticoids [
link],
anthistamines [
link]
and/or epinephrine [
link].
When there are heavy symptoms, an antivenin [
link]
can be applied (snake venom immune serum (Europe)) [
link].
This application only should be performed after a thorough
questioning about benefits and risks. Antivenin is
indicated for example when there is a therapy-resistant
hypotension [low blood pressure by defect blood vessels
with much blood loss], or when there is a heavy edema, an
acidosis or nervous damage symptoms (CNS symptoms)."
[web16]
Translation 14 (orig. German): "Measures: The pressure
immobilization method must NOT be applied. This measure
can have heavy consequences. The same counts for bindings
blocking circulation. Mostly such measures are triggering
remaining damage after a bite. The affected zone has to be
kept calm. The patient has to be in horizontal position
calmly be transported to a clinic. There should be
installed an intravenous access and it should be given a
crystalloid solution. It makes sense to calm down excited
patients (give a calmer sedative [web20]). Further
measures up to the arrival at the clinic will be as the
symptoms come out. There exist an antivenin. Giving it is
discussed controversially. Normally, processing of an
antivenin comes only after the order of a poison
information center." [web18]
The homeopathic remedy Vipera aspic
The two poisons of Aspic viper (Vipera aspis) and the
common European viper (Vipera berus) are slightly
different:
1) The poison of the Aspic viper is stronger than the
poison of the common European viper because the Aspic
viper has a smaller reservoir than the common European
viper [web05]
2) The snake poison of the Aspic viper sometimes contains
nerve toxins that the common European viper's venom does

berus will be administered
Translation (orig. German): "In every case, it's always
better to use a homeopathic remedy of a related snake of
the same genus as, for example Vipera berus, when the bite
was by a Vipera aspic. For some snake bites, there are
aside of the almost isopathic procedure further
homeopathic remedies and counter venoms (antidotes) in
potentiated form." [web27]

Translation 01: orig. italiano: "Il morso della vipera
comune produce reazioni infiammatorie e una
contrattura dolorosa dei muscoli nella zona colpita,
che può durare parecchi giorni. Nelle forme moderate,
sono presenti anche nausea, vomito e formicolii.
Sintomi gravi sono, invece, shock, paralisi
respiratoria e collasso cardiocircolatorio." [web06]
Translation 02: orig.
ausbreiten. In selteneren Fällen können jedoch auch
Beschwerden wie Übelkeit, Erbrechen, niedriger
Blutdruck, Herzklopfen, Krämpfe, Bewusstseinstrübungen
oder sogar Lähmungen auftreten." [web13]
Translation 03: orig.
manipulieren, also keine Schnitte oder Staubbinden
[web14]
Translation 04: orig.
[web15]
Translation 05: orig. German: "Zumeist geht die
Intoxikation durch einen
Biss der Aspisviper vor allem mit
lokalen Symptomen einher. Es kommt zu
sofort einsetzenden
Schmerzen und einem rasch
einsetzenden
Ödem am gebissenen Gliedmaß mit
bläulicher Verfärbung. Die Beschwerden klingen für
gewöhnlich innerhalb von 8 bis 10 Tagen ab.
Systemische Komplikationen können
Schwindel,
Emesis,
Tachykardie und
Hypotonie bis hin zum
Kollaps sein. Weiterhin kann es
selten zu
Blutungen (z.B. der
Mundschleimhaut)
und
Krämpfen
kommen. Schwere
neurotoxische Wirkungen
sind nicht zu erwarten. Eine Schädigung des
Herzmuskels
und die Komplikation einer
Schockniere sind möglich. Eine
Nekrotisierung der Bissstelle
tritt nur selten und zumeist nach Manipulation
derselben auf. Die Gefahr einer
allergischen
Reaktion bis hin zur
anaphylaktischen
[web16]
Translation 06: orig. German: "
Symptome: Es
treten Übelkeit, Erbrechen, Bauchschmerzen und
Durchfall auf. Bei mehr als 80 % der Patienten
traten diese Symptome innerhalb von zwei Stunden
auf. Die Patienten schwitzen, sind blass, haben
eine Tachykardie [Herzrasen] und eine Hypotonie
[niedriger Blutdruck]. Ein Schock tritt selten
auf. Ebenfalls selten sind Bewusstseinsstörungen
bis hin zur Bewusstlosigkeit. Anaphylaktische
Reaktionen bis hin zum anaphylaktischen Schock
sind möglich. Meist findet die Sensibilisierung
nicht durch die gleiche Vipern-Art statt. Man
berus). Auch bei schweren Vergiftungen sind
systemische Blutungen selten. In den Toxinen der
europäischen Vipern sind Neurotoxine gefunden
worden. Meist tritt aber bei einem Biss kein
Effekt auf. Man vermutet als Begründung eine zu
geringe Neurotoxinmenge. Es sind aber vereinzelte
Fälle mit einer neurologischen Symptomatik
bekannt. Auch Myotoxine sind in den Toxinen
gefunden worden. Auch hier sind Effekte sehr
selten beschrieben worden und man vermutet hier
als Grund ebenfalls die geringe Menge im
Toxingemisch. Schädigungen des Herzens sind bei
Vergiftungen durch Vipern berichtet worden. Der
kausale Zusammenhang ist aber unklar.
Nierenfunktionsstörungen sind selten. Wenn sie
auftreten, sind sie vor allem Folgen der
Hypotension. Siehe
auch bei den Studien." [web18])
Translation 07: orig.
Augen.
neuromuskulären Kontraktionen in In-vitro- Präparaten
nicht. Das Fehlen dieser neurotoxischen Wirkung würde
darauf hinweisen, dass tödliche Fälle mit Beteiligung
des Herz-Kreislauf-Systems das Ergebnis einer direkten
Muskelverletzung oder eines verringerten
Sauerstoffaustauschs sind. Andererseits berichtete
Gonzalez (1991), dass die Opfer in zwei Fällen
neurotoxische Symptome entwickelten, einschließlich
Atem- und Schluckbeschwerden sowie Lähmungen der
gebissenen Gliedmaßen." [web31]
Translation 08: orig. German: "Der typische Verlauf
beobachtet. Im Verlauf der nächsten Stunden schwillt
das gebissene Körperteil heftig an, Extremitäten
können auf den doppelten bis dreifachen Umfang
anwachsen. Die Schwellung verfärbt sich meist
dunkelbläulich (vergleiche Lachesis), begleitet von
Ekchymosen.
Andere
Allgemeinsymptome ähneln denen anderer Schlangengifte
(Lachesis, Naja, Crotalus): Blutdruckabfall

Translation 09: orig. German: "Mittelschwere
geschwollenen Gesicht gefunden. Die Pulse waren kaum
zu tasten. Nun wurde der Patient in eine Klinik
eingeliefert. Der Durchfall und die abdominellen
Krämpfe hielten weiter an.
Druckeinwirkung."
Translation 10: orig.
Doppler-Sonographie ergab keinen pathologischen
Befund.
Translation 11: orig. German: "Stattdessen sollte der
Gebissene ausreichend Flüssigkeit zu sich nehmen und
möglichst schnell, in liegender Position, zu einem
Arzt transportiert werden. Dort könne ihm ein
Antiserum verabreicht werden." [web13]
Translation 12: orig. German: "Die betroffene
Gliedmasse sollte man ruhigstellen, allfällige Ringe
wandern, sondern sofort umzukehren.»
kommen." [web14]
Translation 13: orig. German: "Nach erfolgtem Giftbiss
sollte der Betroffene unbedingt Ruhe bewahren, die
Bissstelle ist ruhigzustellen. Das Abbinden des
gebissenen Gliedmaßes (
Kompressionsverband)
wird kontrovers diskutiert, eventuell werden dadurch
lokal-toxische Wirkungen noch verstärkt. Es sollte
unverzüglich ein Notarzt angefordert werden. Der
Patient ist liegend zu transportieren. In der Regel
reicht eine
symptomatische Therapie aus. Eine
Tetanusprophylaxe
sollte durchgeführt werden. Ein ggf. auftretender
Schock wird
intensivmedizinisch
behandelt - u.a. mit
Glukokortikoiden,
Antihistaminika
und/oder
Epinephrin.
Bei schweren Verläufen steht ein
Antivenin (
Schlangengift-Immunserum
(Europa)) zur Verfügung. Dessen Applikation darf
nur nach gründlicher Nutzen-Risiko-Abwägung erfolgen.
Indiziert ist das Antivenin zum Beispiel bei
therapieresistenter
Hypotonie, stark und zügig
anschwellendem
Ödem,
Azidose oder
ZNS-Symptomen."
[web16]
Translation 14: orig.
symptomatisch. Es existiert ein Antivenin. Die Gabe
wird aber kontrovers diskutiert. Die Gabe eines
Antivenins erfolgt erst nach Weisung einer
